Farr 30 Design Overview
If you’re serious about racing sailboats, you know the Mumm 30. The Bruce Farr-designed Mumm 30 is generally thought to be one of the best 30 foot race boats ever designed, and it's still the fastest production boat in its class.
With a carbon fiber mast, oversized mainsail, and massive cockpit, the boat handles like a dingy, yet cuts through the waves like an Open 60. Still, the Farr 30 is a relatively simple boat: no overlapping jibs; no runners; and no checkstays.
With growing One-Deisgn fleets throughout the country, Farr 30s are making OD starts at major regattas such as Key West, BIRW, Annapolis NOOD, LBRW, and CalRW.
In PHRF racing, the Farr 30 rates an extremely fast +42. Yet when sailed well, the boat is still very competitive.
The bottom line is that the Farr 30 is a modern, Grand Prix-level racing sailboat. And while the Farr 30 is relatively easy to sail, it's still the fastest 30-footer around.
So much for the hyperbole. Check out this video of Mumm 30s ripping it up during the Tour de France a la voile.
